Katie Nicole Harmon (she/her/hers) is Principal Dancer and Program Coordinator at Aerial Dance Chicago. She is also a Teaching Artist at the School of Aerial Dance, where she sets work on ADC's LaunchPAD program and Youth Dance Ensemble. In addition to her work at ADC, she is an independent filmmaker, choreographer, and instructor. Originally from small town Rutherfordton, NC, her early dance training took place against a backdrop of Blue Ridge Mountains, creating a deep reverence for the natural world that pervades Harmon’s body of work. Graduating Summa Cum Laude, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Performance, Choreography, and Theory at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2018.
Katie explores contemporary ballet movement vocabularies through aerial arts, contortion practices, digital mediums, and improvisation. Harmon’s work is centered on the synthesis of art forms and the creation of atmosphere, with strong influences from nature, environmentalism, and science. While she has presented staged choreography throughout the East Coast and abroad, she also choreographs and self-produces multimedia video collages to explore the relationship between the physical/animal body and the digital/virtual realm. With her roots in Western North Carolina, she is passionate about increasing access and exposure to professional dance in rural youth populations. Harmon’s work is published in print, and her films have been screened across the USA in major arts hubs like Palm Springs, Chicago, and New York City; as well as internationally in Poland, Lebanon, Serbia, Greece, and Italy.
